The caves near Branson range from a stair walk under a theme park to a ride-through in Springfield. This guide compares four of them by what each tour involves. See also our best time to visit Branson guide and the Thousand Hills Resort Hotel home page.

Which Caves Near Branson Can You Actually Tour?

Four caves can be toured from Branson: Marvel Cave at Silver Dollar City, Talking Rocks Cavern in Branson West, the Lost Canyon Cave at Top of the Rock, and Fantastic Caverns in Springfield. The first three are in the Branson area, and Fantastic Caverns is a day trip north.

They are very different tours. One is a 60-minute stair walk, one is a guided walk with a play area above ground, one is an electric-cart trail that passes through a cave, and one is a ride-through. The sections below set out the facts for each.

Is Marvel Cave Included With a Silver Dollar City Ticket?

Yes. Silver Dollar City says a tour of Marvel Cave is always included with your theme park ticket, with tours leaving throughout the day, weather permitting. There is no separate cave ticket to buy, and the park was built around the cave’s entrance.

The park describes the tour as about 60 minutes, mostly stairs and ramps, starting with a descent of 300 feet to the Cathedral Room, which it calls the largest cave entrance room in the United States. The tour is strenuous, and the park does not recommend it for visitors with heart or lung conditions, bad backs or weak knees or ankles. Guests under 8 may take part with a supervising companion. The way back up is a cable train, installed in 1957, that climbs 1,070 feet to the surface. Details are on the park’s Marvel Cave page.

Because the cave sits inside the theme park, plan around the park’s calendar, which has closed days in November. Our Thanksgiving in Branson guide lists the closed days.

Is Talking Rocks Cavern Worth the Trip?

Talking Rocks Cavern is worth it if you want a guided cave tour plus things for children to do above ground. Its own site says it is open daily from 9 am, tours leave frequently until 5 pm, and no reservations are needed.

The guided walking tour at Talking Rocks Cavern on Fairy Cave Lane in Branson West lasts about an hour in a cave that stays around 63 degrees. The cave has 265 stairs, so the cavern says it cannot take wheelchairs or strollers, though the gift shop, patio and family game park are accessible. Closed-toe shoes with good traction are suggested, because the amount of water in the cave follows the rain outside.

Admission is $33.95 for adults (13 and up) and $19.95 for children (4 to 12), and children 3 and under are free. The ticket includes the nature trail and lookout tower, a family games area, a kids’ play area and the SpeleoBox crawl mazes. Gemstone panning and mini-golf cost extra.

Prices can change, so we suggest calling the attraction to confirm before you go.

What Is the Lost Canyon Cave Like?

The Lost Canyon Cave is a cave inside a 2.5-mile nature tour, not a cave-only visit. Big Cedar Lodge describes a trail past rock formations, waterfalls and lake views, a cave, and a skybridge overlook, all done in an electric cart.

Per the Lost Canyon Cave and Nature Trail page, it is open daily from 8:30 am to 6:30 pm, and the last cart leaves an hour before closing, weather permitting. Carts hold up to four people, and the driver must be 18 or older. On Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays you must arrive in your selected time slot, so book ahead for a weekend. Non-members also pay a $10 per-vehicle entry fee to Top of the Rock, by card only. Ticket prices vary, so check the page before you plan.

Prices can change, so we suggest calling the attraction to confirm before you go.

Is Fantastic Caverns a Day Trip From Branson?

Fantastic Caverns suits visitors who want a different kind of cave: a ride-through tour. It is in Springfield, so plan it as a separate day trip, not an add-on to a Branson afternoon. Its address is 4872 North Farm Road 125 in Springfield.

Fantastic Caverns calls itself Missouri’s ride-thru cave, at a cool 60 degrees. General admission is $36 for adults and $18 for children 6 to 12, and children 5 and under are free with a parent. It is open daily except Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, with the last tour leaving an hour before closing, and its current hours are posted on its site.

Prices can change, so we suggest calling the attraction to confirm before you go.

Which Cave Suits Young Children, Older Visitors or Rainy Days?

For young children, Talking Rocks includes the most above-ground activities of the four, with a play area, games and crawl mazes. For anyone who cannot manage stairs, the two walking caves are the hard ones: Marvel Cave is mostly stairs and ramps, and Talking Rocks has 265 stairs.

The Lost Canyon tour is by electric cart and Fantastic Caverns is a ride-through, so neither is described as a stair walk, but check with each operator about mobility needs.

Marvel Cave tours and the Lost Canyon carts both run weather permitting, and Talking Rocks suggests shoes that cope with a wet cave after rain. Where Should You Stay for a Branson Cave Trip?

If you plan to see more than one cave, or add shows and other attractions around the tours, you will want a base that suits the whole trip. Thousand Hills Resort Hotel is at 120 S. Wildwood Dr. in Branson, and our guide to the attractions near the hotel shows what is close.

The hotel’s website lists a complimentary breakfast buffet for registered guests, served each morning, which helps before a morning tour.

Breakfast details can change, so we suggest calling the hotel to confirm before you arrive.

Once you have picked your cave, check availability and reserve your room direct. For questions about your dates, call (877) 815-0990 or use the hotel’s contact page.

The guided walking tour at Talking Rocks Cavern lasts about an hour, in a cave that stays around 63 degrees.
